From the African-American Political Pundit we learn that Tavis Smiley has run screaming out of the kitchen.
Tavis Smiley has resigned as a twice-weekly commentator on the syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" after 11 years on the air, citing fatigue and a busy schedule in a personal call to Joyner. Joyner disputed that on the air and in his blog, however, writing: "The real reason is that he can't take the hate he's been getting regarding the Barack issue -- hate from the black people that he loves so much."
Hate? Come on now. I don't think so Tom, although I understand you're trying to cover for your boy by deflecting it on all of us unreasonable people who won't simply follow the leader because we're told to. No matter what the "real" reason is, Tavis comes off looking like he's taking his ball and going home because we won't play the game his way.
Tavis had Black America in the palm of his hands a couple of years back. We thought he was really pushing for change, real change. Until the next Covenant with Black America forum came along and there were more corporate logos than the law allowed on his stage. And the culmination of the Covenant with Black America effort? Nothing more than buy my book. I've been through with Tavis since then.
This year's whining just confirmed for me that Tavis is about Tavis, and while I'm still proud of the brother and acknowledge that he has blazed the path a little further, I also realize there will be others, maybe somebody in the Afrosphere, who will pick up the torch as the next media star and hopefully help our people to keep advancing.
